The loss of the Iowa National Guard soldiers and their interpreter in Syria brings to mind Jesus’ words: “Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one's life for one's friends” (John 15:13). Their sacrifice in a troubled land echoes the biblical call to protect the vulnerable and pursue justice (Micah 6:8), even as we mourn with those who mourn (Romans 12:15) and pray for comfort, peace, and wisdom for all involved.
